The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has scrapped a proposal to charge light and metro rail transit (LRT-MRT) passengers a flat fare rate, which would have offered a uniform rate for travel on the LRT-MRT, regardless of the distance travelled by passengers. Earlier, the SM Consortium, one of the five pre-qualified bidders for the PhP 1.72 billion automated fare collection system, had requested DOTC to consider the proposal, as it would reduce the costs of operating and maintaining the fare system. Under such a system, the ticket gates would be required at the entry only. However, DOTC concluded that such a fare system would not have been acceptable to the general public.
