The construction of a second bridge linking Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, Malaysia, with Sungai Golok in Thailand is progressing as scheduled. The authorities of Thailand are currently finalising the contractor selection, with a decision expected by September 2025. Construction is set to begin as early as September 2025, or by December 2025 at the latest, with completion targeted within 36 months.
The new six-lane bridge, planned to run parallel to the existing Muhibbah Bridge, will span 117.3 meters and is designed to ease congestion, support regional economic activity, and enhance cross-border connectivity. The project also includes upgrade works to the current bridge infrastructure.
The estimated cost of the project is jointly funded, with Thailand contributing RM32 million and Malaysia allocating RM17 million. No significant objections have been raised by local communities, and feasibility assessments have not indicated any negative environmental or social impacts.
Once completed, the new crossing is expected to improve trade flow, reduce reliance on informal river crossings, and boost bilateral cooperation. The initiative is seen as part of wider efforts to advance ASEAN connectivity and support the growing Malaysia–Thailand trade relationship, which reached USD25.03 billion in 2024.
