The Government of Ho Chi Minh City has commenced construction of the Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem metro section, a key part of Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) network expansion. The 5.99 km line will run underground, including a tunnel beneath the Saigon River—making it the first fully underground metro project in Vietnam.
The line will connect Ben Thanh Station in the city centre to Thu Thiem Station, a rapidly developing urban area. Designed with full automation and a structural lifespan of at least 100 years, the project incorporates advanced tunnelling techniques to safely pass beneath the riverbed.
Thu Thiem Station is planned as a major interchange hub, linking future corridors such as the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh Airport metro and the North–South high-speed railway. Authorities aim to integrate technology standards across multiple lines, enabling seamless through-running services without passenger transfers.
Once integrated with planned extensions, the corridor is expected to provide a direct rail connection between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh International Airport, significantly enhancing regional mobility and airport accessibility. The project marks a major step toward building a comprehensive, interconnected metro system for southern Vietnam.
