Construction works at the Karawang International Airport that will have an annual handling capacity of up to 70 million passengers will begin in 2015. Built across 900 hectares in Karawang, east of Jakarta, the new airport is expected to commence operations in 2019. The airport will have four runways and two terminals. The first phase of the airport development is estimated to cost $1.09 billion. The new facility is needed as the annual passenger traffic at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (with an annual handling capacity of 22 million passengers) has reached more than 50 million.
