Construction work on the greenfield road connecting Phongsaly province to the Chinese border has begun. The 142 km Bounneua–Lantoui international border checkpoint section of Road No. 1A is expected to be built in 54 months. The project is estimated to cost $91.5 million, of which 95 per cent will be funded by the Chinese government and the remainder by the Lao government. Construction work is being undertaken by the Guangdong No. 3 Water Conservancy and Hydroelectric Engineering Board.
