Construction has started on the 30 km north–south Thomson Line of the Singapore MRT system. The underground line will connect Woodlands North to the Central Business District and Marina Bay, covering 22 stations. It will have six interchange stations linking the East and West, the North and South, and the Circle and Downtown lines. The project will be implemented in three phases and is expected to serve 400,000 passengers daily by 2021.

In May 2014, a consortium of Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries and China-based CSR Qingdao Sifang secured the SGD 749 million contract to supply 91 four-car driverless train sets for the Thomson Line and the Eastern Region Line.
