Construction has commenced on the North-South Commuter Railway Extension (NSCR-Ex) project in the Philippines. The project includes works on two extension lines, comprising the of the 51 km North extension from Malolos to Clark International Airport, and the 55 km South extension from Solis to Calamba.

The Government of Philippines and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inked a JPY167.20 billion loan agreement for the NSCR-Ex in January 2019. It is one of the major infrastructure projects supported by the government of Japan as part of the Philippines’ Build, Build, Build programme. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the government of Japan, through JICA, are co-financing NSCR-Ex project. Loan from the Government of Japan will be used to purchase train stock and railway systems, as well as consulting services, while the ADB issued loan will be used to finance civil works.

In addition to reducing traffic congestion, the extension project will employ Japan’s energy efficient train cars to reduce pollution.
