Construction of the long-awaited urban railway in Jakarta began in October 2013. The first phase of the 15.7 km mass rapid transit line from the city’s southern neighbourhood of Lebak Bulus to downtown Jakarta includes seven elevated and six underground stations. The total investment in the first phase is estimated at around $1.5 billion. It is being built by two consortiums of local and Japanese companies. The targeted date for services to begin is end-2016. The second phase, to extend the line northwards by 8.1 km, should be completed by 2018, two years ahead of the initial target.
