Malaysia-based Coara Solar has commenced the development of a 116 MW solar project in Marang, Terengganu, in north-east of Malaysia. The project is being developed in association with Ibvogt under the third round of the country’s Large Scale Solar scheme being implemented by the Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST)/Energy Commission of Malaysia in 2019.

The project, covering a total area of 245 hectares, will make use of bifacial technology mounted on single-axis trackers to ensure efficiency. It is expected to be online in the first quarter of 2022. Once operational, it will produce 230 GWh of clean energy annually and save on 170,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

This project is a part of the government’s plan to increase the country’s share of renewables in its energy mix to 20 per cent by 2025. The current share is close to 2 per cent.
