The Doi Suthep cable car project is back in discussion, as Austria’s Doppelmayr Group presented a renewed proposal to Chiang Mai in Thailand. The project proposes a 2.2 km cable car linking Chiang Mai Zoo to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, cutting travel time to under 10 minutes and significantly reducing road traffic and emissions along the 11 km mountain road.
The project received initial support from the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation and Chamber of Commerce, which emphasised its potential to boost green tourism and reduce environmental impact. The system promises low land use, minimal tree cutting, fast construction, and high safety standards. Authorities will now evaluate the proposal across environmental, economic, and community dimensions before moving forward.
