The Governments of Cambodia and Vietnam have agreed to fast-track plans to connect the Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway with the Moc Bai–Ho Chi Minh City Expressway through the existing Bavet–Moc Bai international border crossing, targeting completion by 2030. The two countries’ transport ministries discussed the project in Hanoi, focusing on technical standards, infrastructure integration and arrangements for seamless cross-border traffic.
The connection is intended to reduce congestion at the border and improve the use of both expressways. Cambodia’s 138-km Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway is currently under construction and will run through three provinces to Bavet in Svay Rieng province. The initiative supports the two countries’ broader goal of increasing bilateral trade, which reached nearly USD4.72 billion in the first half of 2026, up nine per cent year on year.
