The Government of Cambodia has proposed the Japan-based, Yazaki explore setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) in the country to attract more Japanese investment in the country. Yazaki currently runs an electric wire component factory in the Neang Kok Koh Kong SEZ and is also active in Guangdong, China.
From January to April 2025, trade between Cambodia and Japan reached USD832.29 million, up nearly 30 per cent from the previous year. Cambodia-based exports stood at USD523.49 million while imports hit USD308.8 million. Experts believe a new SEZ backed by Japanese investors like Yazaki could spur more Japanese companies to invest in Cambodia, citing the country’s stable political climate, investor-friendly laws, and strong infrastructure as key advantages. The Ministry of Commerce reported that 88 Japanese firms registered in Cambodia in 2024, a 20.55 per cent increase from 2023.
