The Government of Cambodia has completed a major infrastructure upgrade of National Road 48 in Koh Kong province, a 148 km stretch connecting Sre Ambel (via National Road 4) to Khemarak Phoumin town. The USD78 million project, funded through a South Korean grant, was officially handed over to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport following a final inspection on June 17, 2025.
Led by Ministry Secretary of State So Victor, the inspection evaluated construction quality, traffic signage, asphalt compaction, and drainage. Despite delays due to COVID-19 and challenging terrain, the project—originally scheduled for completion by July 2024—was concluded in May 2025. The road includes five upgraded four-lane segments and 118 km of two-lane surfacing, all built with asphalt concrete. South Korean firms Ilsung and Hanil handled construction, with KCIeng & KECC as technical consultants.
The new road serves as a vital corridor linking Cambodia’s interior provinces—Pursat, Battambang, and Pailin—to the coastal region and the Sihanoukville deep-sea port. It also enhances regional integration and trade with Thailand. Officials stressed the need for strict weight-limit enforcement to preserve road quality. Under warranty, the contractor will maintain the road for two years post-handover.
