Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have reviewed the preliminary report of a joint research study focused on improving and upgrading Cambodia’s railway sector. The review meeting was held in Phnom Penh and aimed at validating technical findings before the report is finalised.

The session examined the clarity, technical robustness and sector relevance of the study, with inputs gathered from Cambodian and Japanese stakeholders. Officials discussed proposed recommendations, data assumptions and implementation considerations to ensure the final report is comprehensive and aligned with Cambodia’s rail development needs. The meeting was conducted in both in-person and virtual formats to enable wider technical participation.

The study forms part of ongoing technical cooperation between Cambodia and Japan to support rail infrastructure planning and capacity building. MPWT officials acknowledged the contribution of MLIT representatives and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) experts, noting that the finalised report is expected to inform future railway rehabilitation, upgrading and expansion initiatives across the country.
