The Board of Investments (BOI) has approved Libertad Power and Energy Corporation’s application to construct a PHP919.4 million biomass plant in Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. The 6 MW biomass facility is scheduled to commence commercial operation in December 2022.

The Biomass Renewable Energy Operating Contract (BREOC) No. 2018-05-089 will govern the development, construction, installation, commissioning, and operation of the Biomass Energy System, which will generate electrical power using a Direct Combustion System (Boiler Steam Turbine Generator) with rice husk, coconut husk, rice straw, corn cobs, wood chips, and coconut parts as feedstock.

The biomass project is expected to contribute to Mindanao’s required capacity additions of 12,273 MW as well as help the Philippines meet the National Renewable Energy Plan’s (NREP) target of generating 823 MW of biomass power by 2040.
