Blueleaf Energy, in partnership with Universal Peak Sdn Bhd, has secured a contract from the Energy Commission of Malaysia to build, own and operate a 100 MW/400 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) under Malaysia’s inaugural MyBeST programme. The project is slated for commissioning in 2027 and represents one of the largest grid-connected BESS deployments in Peninsular Malaysia to date.
The MyBeST initiative is part of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050. The BESS facility will provide vital grid services such as frequency regulation, peak load shifting and energy arbitrage, helping integrate higher shares of variable renewable energy like solar by storing excess generation and delivering it during periods of peak demand. These capabilities reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants and enhance overall grid resilience.
