The MRT Corporation has announced plans to extend the upcoming Bayan Lepas light rail transit (LRT) line in Penang to Penang Sentral in Butterworth, Malaysia. The project is part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) and the new LRT route will now connect the island and mainland section through an elevated railway across the Penang Strait.

As per the original plan, the LRT line will span 26.8 km from the Penang South Islands to Komtar. The project is expected to cost RM10 billion, serving 23 stations. Further, the new plan is to add four more stations to the original plan.

Moreover, PTMP has other key highway and rail projects which include the Pan Island Link 1 highway, and the Ayer Itam -Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway Bypass and Ayer Itam Line, Tanjung Tokong Line, and George Town tram line.
