The Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) has announced plans to introduce new contactless payment methods using Visa and Mastercard on its transit system. Passengers will be able to scan their credit card at the gate rather than having to touch a plastic token to the reader.

The Bangkok subway has been in operation since 2004. The Blue Line spans 21 km and covers 18 stations, connecting the Hua LamPhong railway station to Bang Sue in the north-central part of the capital. The Purple Line serves the north-western part of Bangkok and Nonthaburi Province.
