Malaysia-based Axiata Group has announced its commitment to reduce carbon emissions from operations and attain net-zero by 2050. Axiata has signed up for the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Business Ambition for 1.5 degrees campaign, making it the first telecommunications business in Malaysia to do so.

The SBTi pledge complements Axiata’s Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap, which is set to begin in Q1 2022 and aims to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by reducing emissions from network and connectivity activities.

The targets are in line with the United Nations’ (UB) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on climate action and the GSM Association’s (GSMA) goal of net-zero carbon emissions in the mobile network operations industry by 2050.
