Thailand received 13 awards across various categories at the recently held ASEAN Energy Awards 2013. The country won five and eight awards under the renewable energy and energy saving categories, respectively. The wastewater treatment project in Chantaburi province emerged as the winner in the “Commercial Based On-Grid” category of renewable energy projects. Next, Extension Phase II of the Chang Cogeneration Power Plant, owned and operated by Dan Chang Bio-Energy Company Limited Thailand, won in the “Cogeneration” category of renewable energy projects. Further, Gheco-One Project of Gehco-One Company Limited was recognised for its best practices in the “Clean Coal Use and Technology” in the power generation category. The Sukhothai Heritage Resort in Thailand picked up an award in the “Energy-Efficient Buildings” category.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Sinar Mas Land outperformed its peers in ASEAN, in terms of minimising energy and water usage, at its building. It was the winner in the “New and Existing Buildings” category. The Sinar Mas Land Plaza building effected energy and water savings of up to 31 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.

Malaysia-based Petronas’s first solar photovoltaic (PV) project achieved the first runner-up position in the “Commercial Based On-Grid” category of renewable energy. The PV project, installed at the Suria KLCC shopping mall rooftop, employs six different types of solar technologies. It is Petronas’s first venture in renewable energy.

Some of the other projects that were recognised during the awards in the renewable energy space are the large-scale, solar-assisted hot water heating system at the National University of Malaysia Medical Centre and Sammitr Green Power’s solar-powered charging station for electrical motorcycles at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand.

The annual ASEAN Energy Awards, inaugurated in 2000, are organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy to acknowledge the outstanding work of the region’s enterprises and individuals in the energy sector. In 2013, the ASEAN Energy Awards were organised in conjunction with the 31st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in Bali, Indonesia. During the two-day forum, energy ministers of the 10 member nations discussed regional energy cooperation, the development of renewable energy in the region, as well as effective energy saving and supportive measures. The ASEAN Energy Awards 2013 were divided into five categories: ASEAN Best Practice Competition for Energy Efficiency Buildings; ASEAN Best Practice Competition for Energy Management in Buildings and Industries; ASEAN Renewable Energy Project Competition; ASEAN Best Practice Competition in Coal Projects; and ASEAN Individual Excellence in Energy Management.
