This month’s cover story, “Cultivating Ties”, takes a look at the huge need for infrastructure development in one of the region’s emerging economies, Cambodia. According to industry estimates, Cambodia needs $500 million-$700 million a year for infrastructure development in segments such as roads, bridges, and power. Among the specific measures to promote the development of infrastructure is the government’s National Strategic Development Plan, 2014-18. Foreign funds will play a key role in the country’s future development.

Another country that we are taking a closer look at in this issue is the Philippines. Our story, “Concerted Efforts”, explores Globe Telecom’s business strategies to strengthen market position as the market embraces intense competition. Similarly, the story  “Gaining Momentum” highlights the efforts of a leading operator, Manila Water, to improve the water supply situation. Over the years, the company has not only made international business forays, but has also expanded its business verticals to include sewage and septage management, designing and laying of pipeline networks, etc., besides treating and supplying raw water.

A major development in the Philippines road sector – commissioning of the NAIA Expressway in 2016 – is covered in our story “Improved Access”. The Philippines is also keenly looking at solutions to resolve the long-pending issues of the sector, as highlighted in our story “Expansion Plans”. These are a lack of competition, overdependence on fossil fuels, high electricity tariffs, depleting domestic fuel reserves, and inadequate grid connectivity.

Besides, cross-border connectivity remains a key focus area as discussed in our stories “Zooming Ahead” and “Tardy Progress”.
