The Asian Development Bank has approved 28.29 million baht for the railway sector in Thailand, which will be provided under the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) grant. JFPR provides grants for projects supporting poverty reduction and related social development activities. The Thailand government aims to increase the share of rail in total freight transport from the current 2 per cent to 8 per cent by 2020. The government has committed up to 176 billion baht for the 2010–15 period to modernise and improve railway operations in the country.
