The Government of Thailand has announced plans to extend its Thai–Chinese high-speed railway to Nong Khai on the Lao border have moved the Laos-China Railway a step closer to integration with Thailand’s rail network. The Thai government plans to invite bids in December 2026 for eight civil works contracts covering the 357.12-km second phase between Nakhon Ratchasima and Nong Khai. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and be completed by 2031, extending the high-speed line from Bangkok to Nong Khai.
The extension will support the integration of Thailand’s railway network with the Laos-China Railway and contribute to the long-term development of the 3,900-km Pan-Asian railway corridor linking Kunming in China with Singapore through Laos, Thailand and Malaysia. Thailand has also reported that construction of the first phase between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima has reached 55.27 per cent and remains on track for completion in 2030. In parallel, Lao and Thai authorities are planning a new railway bridge across the Mekong River featuring dual tracks—a standard-gauge line connecting the Thailand-China high-speed railway with the Laos-China Railway and a metre-gauge line linking Thailand’s existing rail network with the Laos-Thailand railway.
The Laos-China Railway, which commenced operations in December 2021, has recorded strong growth in passenger and freight traffic. Annual cargo volumes increased from 12.47 million tonnes in 2022 to 24.48 million tonnes in 2025, while the railway carried more than 400,000 cross-border passengers and over 600,000 tonnes of cross-border freight during the first half of 2026. Once the Nong Khai extension and the new cross-border rail bridge are completed, the three-country rail corridor is expected to provide more efficient passenger and freight transport while supporting regional trade, tourism and economic integration.
