International solar developer ib vogt has commenced commercial operations at the 99 MWp Tantangan Solar Power Plant in South Cotabato, Philippines, following an energisation ceremony held less than a year after construction began. The project is ib vogt’s second solar development in Mindanao and has been designated a national priority under the Philippines’ clean energy programme. It is also one of the largest solar projects in the region, exceeding the typical 10–50 MWp capacity range of most solar installations in the country.
The Tantangan project combines solar photovoltaic (PV) generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to provide a dispatchable, near-baseload renewable energy solution that supports rising electricity demand and improves grid reliability in Mindanao. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate more than 150 GWh of electricity annually, supplying clean energy to over 82,000 households while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 66,000 tonnes per year.
According to ib vogt, the Tantangan project is its first solar-plus-storage hybrid project in Southeast Asia and the first of more than 500 MW of hybrid renewable energy capacity the company expects to have operational or under construction across the Philippines by the end of 2026. The project received subordinated financing from Pentagreen Capital and British International Investment (BII), with both organisations highlighting the development as an example of collaborative investment supporting the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure and the energy transition across Southeast Asia.
