Singapore has received the first train for the upcoming Cross Island Line (CRL), marking a key milestone in the development of one of the country’s largest Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) projects. The train arrived on May 31, 2026, and will undergo testing at the Singapore Rail Test Centre before entering passenger service as part of the CRL network.

The Cross Island Line is being developed as Singapore’s eighth MRT line and is expected to significantly expand east–west connectivity across the island. The new train will undergo a series of performance, safety and systems integration tests to ensure readiness for future operations. The CRL is designed to improve travel links between major residential, commercial and industrial areas while reducing travel times across the city-state.

The first phase of the Cross Island Line is scheduled to open in 2030 and will connect key locations including Aviation Park, Loyang, Pasir Ris, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio and Bright Hill. Once fully completed, the line is expected to serve hundreds of thousands of passengers daily and strengthen the capacity and resilience of Singapore’s rail network.
