National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is advancing the development of railway technologies across rolling stock, infrastructure and governance to improve transport performance and support regional growth in Indonesia.

The research focuses on three core areas—socio-institutional systems, passenger services and environmental impact—while also strengthening domestic engineering capabilities in engines and rolling stock to accelerate technology transfer. In infrastructure, BRIN is developing structural health monitoring systems for railway bridges and testing new materials such as rubber-based sleepers to enhance safety and durability.

Beyond technical innovation, the agency is studying integrated transport management, particularly in urban areas, to improve system coordination and efficiency. The initiative aligns with national priorities to expand railway networks beyond Java, targeting regions such as Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi to reduce logistics costs and improve competitiveness.
