Hyundai Rotem has secured a major contract in Vietnam, marking its first entry into the country’s railway market through a deal with THACO Group to supply driverless trains and advanced signalling systems for Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2.
The contract, valued at roughly USD330–360 million, covers the delivery of fully automated trainsets for the metro line, alongside a memorandum of understanding to provide signalling and train control systems. This is particularly significant as it represents Hyundai Rotem’s first overseas deployment of driverless signalling technology beyond South Korea.
Metro Line 2 is a key urban transit project in Ho Chi Minh City, planned to span about 64 km with 36 stations and targeted for phased completion around 2030. Construction began earlier in 2026, and the line is expected to play a central role in easing congestion and improving connectivity across the city.
A notable feature of the partnership is the emphasis on localisation. Part of the train manufacturing will take place in Vietnam at a new facility being developed by THACO, supporting the growth of a domestic rail supply chain and technology transfer. This aligns with Vietnam’s broader strategy to build local capabilities in railway engineering and production.
