Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, and NYK Bulkship (Asia) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop ammonia bunkering vessels in Singapore, supporting the country’s transition to low- and zero-emission maritime fuels.
The agreement includes conducting a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study and evaluating the potential acquisition of a purpose-built vessel for ammonia bunkering. The collaboration will define technical specifications, safety standards, operational frameworks, and ownership models tailored to Singapore’s bunkering market.
The initiative aligns with Singapore’s national strategy to position itself as a global hub for sustainable marine fuels, led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Energy Market Authority. Ammonia is being explored as a key alternative fuel for both maritime applications and power generation.
The project is also linked to ongoing developments on Jurong Island, where a consortium led by Keppel Corporation is advancing ammonia-related energy solutions. Within this framework, Sumitomo is leading engineering studies supported by Singapore’s Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund.
