Visa has launched a fully interoperable open-loop contactless payment system across the metro network in Hanoi in Vietnam.
The system, introduced in partnership with Hanoi Metro Company, enables passengers to use contactless bank cards, mobile devices, and wearables to access metro services without the need for cash or dedicated transit cards. The rollout covers Line 2A (Cat Linh–Ha Dong) and Line 3.1 (Nhon–Hanoi Station), and aligns with broader smart mobility initiatives under national development plans.
Key features include the deployment of Visa’s mass transit payment technology and an omnichannel acceptance platform, with VietinBank acting as the acquiring partner. Additional developments include a co-branded transport card with Vietcombank and integration of carbon footprint tracking tools to promote sustainable travel choices.
The system also introduces biometric-enabled payments, allowing passengers to use government-issued IDs or digital identity platforms for seamless entry. Authorities plan to extend the payment solution to other public transport modes, laying the foundation for a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) ecosystem in the city.
