Indonesia’s Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan is on track to begin operating as the country’s political capital by 2028, according to the Indonesia Nusantara Capital Authority. All ongoing and planned development works are being directed toward ensuring that the new capital is ready to host core national government functions within the targeted timeframe.

Progress toward this goal has been reinforced by the signing of six supervision work packages covering strategic infrastructure in the legislative and judicial precincts, which are central to the operation of the political capital. These contracts form a key part of Phase Two of IKN development, spanning 2025 to 2028, and reflect an acceleration of construction activities in line with national priorities.

The supervision packages include oversight of road construction within the legislative complex, roads in supporting areas, and associated supporting infrastructure, with contract periods running between December 2025 and late 2027. Additional packages cover the construction supervision of reservoirs and retention ponds, which are critical for water management and flood control within the capital area.

Overall, 26 of the 28 work packages planned for Phase Two have now been signed, comprising 14 physical construction packages and 12 construction management and supervision packages. The development programme is being implemented in accordance with Presidential Regulation No. 79 of 2025, which sets out the legal and institutional framework for accelerating Nusantara’s development as Indonesia’s new political capital.
