The Hanoi People’s Committee has begun construction on the Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao section of Metro Line 2, a key national infrastructure project valued at VND35 trillion (USD1.37 billion). The project is jointly funded through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) official development assistance and Hanoi’s city budget.
Spanning 11 km, the line will include 1.94 km of elevated and more than 9 km of underground sections running beneath Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter. It will feature 10 stations, including Station C10, which will interchange with Metro Line 3. The 11.3-hectare Xuan Dinh depot will follow a transit-oriented development (TOD) model integrating maintenance facilities, training centers, and mixed-use urban spaces to promote sustainable urban growth.
The Xuan Dinh depot will be Vietnam’s first TOD model, combining transport, residential, and commercial functions. The underground C9 station, located east of Hoan Kiem Lake, will form an integrated underground hub and heritage space. Hanoi plans to develop 15 metro lines totalling 619 km to build a modern and sustainable public transport network.
