The Government of Vientiane will introduce its first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line in early September 2025, marking Laos’ entry into modern mass transit. The service will begin with a three-month free trial, replacing the capital’s outdated and polluting bus fleet. The BRT will run on a 13.9 km dedicated corridor with 27 stations along key arterial roads, including Souphanouvong, Setthathirat, Lanexang, Kaysone Phomvihane, and Dongdok–Kampheng Mueang.
The system will deploy electric buses guided by underground sensors, supported by dedicated traffic lights, CCTV, fire safety systems, and earthquake warning technology. Services will operate daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., with five-minute headways during peak hours and 15 minutes off-peak. BRT lanes are also designed for use by ambulances and fire engines in emergencies.
The project is backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the OPEC Fund. Future expansion will connect Wattay International Airport and the Lao–China Railway Station, with provisions for eventual conversion to a Light Rail Transit (LRT) network as demand grows.
