The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and East Japan Railway Company (JR East) are exploring collaboration to enhance the Philippines’ railway infrastructure. Discussions focused on JR East’s expertise in traffic management, railway maintenance, and strategic partnerships to optimise railway operations, particularly in Manila’s LRT and MRT networks.
JR East representatives highlighted lessons from their Bangkok railway project, stressing how efficient train systems can reduce road congestion. They also underscored the role of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in leveraging official development assistance for Philippine railway projects. JR East expressed commitment to supporting the Marcos administration’s railway initiatives before 2028. The partnership is expected to drive efficiency and sustainability in the Philippine transport sector, contributing to economic growth.
