SMRT Trains has collaborated with Hitachi Rail to implement the Green CBTC Next Gen technology, targeting energy efficiency in Singapore’s rail network as part of its goal for net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2050. Utilising Hitachi’s SelTrac technology, the system automates functions like acceleration and braking to optimise traction power, which is about 50 per cent of network energy use.

The initial phase of this project has already yielded an 8 per cent energy reduction, equating to 15 million kWh annually. SMRT aims for a 15 per cent reduction over the next two years, with ongoing studies to enhance energy efficiency further. This energy-saving initiative not only supports Singapore’s sustainability goals but also promises greener journeys on the North-South and East-West lines.
