The Government of Vietnam has announced plans to develop a new railway line that will span approximately 427 km, connecting Lào Cai to Hạ Long and passing through ten provinces. This project is expected to feature 41 stations and significantly improve transport capacity, with projected annual cargo handling reaching up to 17.48 million tonnes and passenger numbers increasing to 8.31 million by 2050. Investment in the Lào Cai-Hà Nội section is prioritised for completion by 2030.
The total estimated investment for the Lào Cai-Hà Nội-Hải Phòng-Quảng Ninh railway is around USD7 billion, which includes costs for land clearance, construction, and project management. Once completed, this railway is anticipated to bolster connectivity with seaports and industrial zones, facilitating the country’s ongoing industrialisation and modernisation efforts.
