The Department of Energy (DoE) expects to add approximately 7,910.96 MW in additional energy capacity in the Philippines by 2027. Out of the total, with coal-fired plants are expected to account for 46.68 per cent of the total energy share, natural gas accounting for 38.71 per cent, renewable energy (RE) with a 11.39 per cent share, and oil-fuelled facilities will account for 6.67 per cent of the total system.
Some of the major project will include a 600 MW AOE coal-fired power plant Unit 1 that will be co-developed by Atimonan One Energy Incorporated and Meralco PowerGen Corporation. The facility is scheduled to begin commercial operation by June 2025.
Six new natural gas power plant facilities with a combined capacity of 3,062.50 MW will be constructed in Luzon. One of the key natural gas projects is a 1,100-MW natural gas-fired power plant in Batangas City that is scheduled to commence operations by September 2026.
The department is also expected to add around 901.27 MW in total RE capacity by 2027. Out of the total, solar projects will account for 488.27 MW capacity, hydropower will contribute 232.50 MW, geothermal with a 115.60 MW share, and biomass projects will have a share of 64.60 MW.
Tone of the key RE projects includes Solar Philippines Tarlac Corporation’s 115 MW Concepcion 1 solar power project, with operations scheduled for November 2022.
The DoE also has plans to install 2,040 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, majority of which will be deployed by Universal Power Solutions Incorporated in Luzon.
