The target for increasing the capacity of geothermal power plants (PLTP) under the General Plan for the Provision of Electricity (RUPTL) for the period 2021-2030 has fallen to 2,395 MW. PLTP capacity will be gradually increased by 136 MW in 2021, 108 MW by 2022, in 2023 an increase of 190 MW, 131 MW in 2024. Then in 2025 it will increase by 676 MW, in 2026 it will increase by 235 MW, 2027 will see a 233 MW increase, 370 MW increase in 2028, in 2029 by 314 MW and by 3 MW in 2030.

Initially, the Government of Malaysia has set targets for geothermal energy at 7,000 MW by 2030, and then reduced it to 4500 MW. However, there were concerns that these targets were unrealistic and difficult to meet given the timeline. The target has now been finalised at 2395 MW.
