The Myanmar government has allocated 1 GW of solar capacity in its first auction for large-scale photovoltaics. It has allocated all except one of the 30 projects, ranging from 30 MW to 50 MW. Most of the projects will be undertaken by Chinese companies such as Sungrow and the China Machinery Engineering Corporation, which have won nine and eight projects respectively. Myanmar will now sign 15-year power purchase agreements with the selected independent power producers that will develop the project on a build-own-operate basis. The country has set a target to increase the share of renewables in electricity production to 8 per cent in 2021 and 12 per cent in 2025. The country’s solar capacity stood at less than 90 MW at the end of 2019, with the power mix largely dominated by hydropower and gas-based power plants.
