PT MRT Jakarta has commenced construction work on Phase II of the Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) project after a three-month delay due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the capital. MRT Jakarta, the operator of the country’s first subway service, officially commenced construction of a 2.8 km underground tunnel from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle (Bundaran HI) to the National Monument (Monas) in central Jakarta. Construction work on the project is expected to be completed by March 2025. Phase II of the project includes construction of seven underground stations, extending 6.3 km from Bundaran HI to Kota in West Jakarta. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan agreement worth IDR 22.5 trillion ($1.59 billion) to fund Phase II of the project.
