The Department of Energy (DOE) of the Philippines has authorised the Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company’s (AG&P’s) permit-to-construct application for the development of its LNG import facility. The terminal project will be using floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) technology and is expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2022. This is the Philippines’ second project to be awarded a permit to construct, expand, rehabilitate, and modify (PCERM).

The LNG import facility’s intended market will be SMC Global Power Holdings Corporation’s gas-fired power plant projects in the Philippines. However, no final power supply contracts have been finalised.

Currently, the Philippines has around 3,200 MW of operational gas-fired power plants. The country also has planned gas capacity increases which will require higher volumes of LNG imports starting 2022.
