The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has announced that it will phase out 2G services completely by September 2026 in Vietnam. The shutdown will occur in two phases: on land in September 2024 and the Trường Sa (Spratly) and Hoàng Sa (Paracel) archipelagos in September 2026. The MIC encourages telecommunication companies to advise their customers to transition from 2G to 4G or 5G devices. According to the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority (VNTA), the 900/1800MHZ band currently used for 2G will be repurposed for 4G and 5G networks.

Moreover, Viettel and VinaPhone have about 16 per cent and 8 per cent of their subscribers on 2G, respectively. This trend of phasing out 2G networks is part of a global shift towards more advanced technologies.
