Vietnam-based telecom operator Viettel has announced its plans to create a wireless JV, Myanmar National Tele and Communications Company Limited (MNTC), with Myanmar National Telecom Holding, a consortium of 11 local firms and the Star High Public Company, a subsidiary of Myanmar military-owned Myanmar Economic Corporation. MNTC, operating under the MyTel brand, will launch a 4G-only network in the first quarter of 2018. The operator aims to roll out 7,200 base transceiver stationsthat will cover 90 per cent of the population, and support 33,000 km of fibre optic cable.
