The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) plans to open bids for developing 500 kV transmission line projects during 2017. The projects entail laying of new high voltage lines to replace the existing lines which have been in use for more than 40 years. In addition, some of the contracts will also involve extension of the existing lines to help secure the country’s power supply. The projects will require a total investment of 157 billion baht. The development of high voltage transmission projects is part of EGAT’s total capital expenditure of 600 billion baht, to be incurred over the next 10 years. Most of the projects will be bid out for the south and northeast regions of the country, especially the former where several biomass, solar and wind farm projects are due to be developed.
