The Thailand government plans to build new LRT and tram systems in Chiang Mai, Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Phitsanulok provinces under its policy to develop faster and more modern means of transportation across the country. The project is being overseen by the SRT.

In Chiang Mai, a network of LRTs and buses will be developed for enhancing the means of public transportation. In Phuket, the LRT will mostly run on the ground, except for its station at the Phuket International Airport, which will be built on an elevated track, and another station in the Thalang area, which will be built underground. At present, the detailed project report for the project is being prepared. Further, the LRT in Nakhon Ratchasima will have three routes passing through the Nakhon Ratchasima railway station and Nakhon Ratchasima inter-provincial bus terminal. In Khon Kaen, the rail tracks will run north-south from Tambon Samran to Tambon Tha Phra in Muang district, spanning a distance of 22.8 km. In Phitsanulok, the government is yet to decide whether to deploy buses or trams.

The bidding process for five major projects in Thailand’s EEC is expected to be completed in 2018. These are the expansion of U-Tapao airport, the construction of an aircraft repair and maintenance hub at U-Tapao airport, the construction of the third phase of Laem Chabang port, and expansion of Map Ta Phut port. The Ministry of Industry, Thailand, also plans to propose the expansion of the EEC to 18 areas.
