Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Commission/Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat has unveiled the proposed alignment of the East Coast Rail Link, which will connect the East Coast states to the Greater Klang Valley region. The proposed route will span around 600.3 km (including an 18 km tunnel between Gombak and Bentong), connect the Integrated Transport Terminal Gombak and Wakaf Bharu, and cover 23 stations. Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd will construct the project. The end-to-end journey time will be reduced to less than four hours. Passenger services will be operated by a fleet of 11 eight-car electric multiple units (EMUs), with capacity for 600 passengers each. The line will provide interchange facilities with the Klang Valley LRT, bus network and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) East Coast Line. The final alignment will be approved in June 2017 and construction is expected to begin in July 2017. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin by July 2024.
