The state government of Sarawak has announced plans to fund a light rail transit (LRT) line connecting the state capital of Kuching with the neighbouring administrative divisions of Samarahan and Serian. The LRT will be developed without direct funding from the federal government. The project will be developed in stages and be integrated with a planned bus rapid transit (BRT) system. The city currently has no formal public transport system and depends on taxis and minibuses.
