Sihanoukville Autonomous Ports (SAP) is planning to build a $200 million container terminal as part of an expansion project due to be completed in 2022. The new container facilities will increase the annual capacity of the main deep sea port of Cambodia to around 1 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU). The new terminal is set to meet the increasing growth in the volume of containers passing through the port, with the existing container terminal expected to be overloaded by 2023. The port currently handles more than 400,000 TEUs and expects container volumes to rise to over 700,000 TEUs by 2023. The new terminal will be equipped with a 350-metre quay with a depth of 14.5 metres. SAP is currently studying the project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), from which it is expected to seek a loan for the construction of the new facilities.
