The Nam Ngum 1 hydropower extension project unit 7-8 has been inaugurated in Keo-oudom district, Vientiane province. It is an important project in the country’s power development master plan until 2020. DEC and Electricite du Laos (EDL) signed an EPC contract for the Nam Ngum 1 extension project unit 7-8 in 2013. The work on the extension began in 2015 and was completed in April 2018. The extension project has a combined installed capacity of 80 MW and a generating capacity of 59 million kWh per year. The project, worth more than $122 million, received a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China and was developed by the Dongfang Electric Corporation.
