Myanmar has announced plans to generate power from local power plants. Several countries including China, Laos, India and Thailand have offered to supply surplus power to the country. The country, however, has taken no decision regarding the proposal yet. Myanmar has been exporting natural gas – a major power source – to Thailand (1.4 billion cubic feet) and China (300 million cubic feet). According to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE), electricity consumption in Myanmar will be around 4,531 MW by 2020, 8,121 MW by 2025 and 14,542 MW by 2030. The MOEE expects to achieve 100 per cent electrification by 2030.
