The Government of Myanmar has announced its plans to construct a new bridge to ease congestion at the border and facilitate border trade links in Shan state. The bridge will be constructed on the Gotelwin section of the Mandalay-Muse Union highway, which is the main route for border trade between China and Myanmar.

Increasing congestion causes frequent traffic jams on the highway and leads to delays in transportation. This in turn leads to losses for border traders while exporting perishable goods, such as marine products. The highway transports goods worth $16 million using about 3,000 cargo trucks daily.
